The research journey continues to provide valuable insights into informal sector learning and the potential of new technologies. Throughout 2024, extensive fieldwork and analysis have yielded a rich understanding of the challenges and opportunities within this sector. The informal economy is significant, especially in Africa, where it accounts for about 85.8% of employment [1]. This highlights the crucial role it plays in livelihoods and economic development.

One of the key findings from my research is the impact of digital technologies on informal learning. Mobile phone penetration in sub-Saharan Africa has reached 50%, enabling new avenues for education and skills development [2]. Mobile learning platforms can provide accessible training to those who lack formal education opportunities.

For example, in Senegal, mobile-based learning initiatives have shown promise in improving literacy and vocational skills among youth and women in the informal sector [3]. These technologies offer flexible learning schedules and can be tailored to the specific needs of learners, making education more inclusive.

While fieldwork and analysis have provided deep insights, 2025 will be the year to transform these findings into written contributions to the field. I’m looking forward to dedicating more focused time to the writing process, aiming to publish articles and papers that can inform policymakers, educators, and development practitioners.

By sharing this knowledge, we can contribute to developing strategies that enhance learning and economic opportunities in the informal sector. I’m excited about the potential impact of this work and the prospect of influencing positive change through research.
